– Encourages Skilled Trade Workers to Engage with Candidates during Election 2021
January 27, 2021 – With thousands of skilled trade workers unemployed, Trades NL is launching a political engagement campaign that encourages their membership to question political leaders and district candidates on how their political party intends to get our skilled trade workers back to work, should they form government.
“We understand the solutions are not all quick and easy, however, we do see opportunities before us in the resource sector and on public infrastructure for good construction jobs that should be available to qualified Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Therefore, we are encouraging our members to ask their local candidates if they support the issues which are important to local skilled trade workers.” – John Leonard, President, Trades NL
Additionally, Trades NL has written all political leaders soliciting the position of their Party on the following four issues important to members of the building trades, their families and communities:
Maximizing the number of construction jobs from resource development projects
Implementing a Newfoundland and Labrador Benefits Agreement policy
Development of the Bull Arm Site to attract work opportunities
Implementation of a skilled trades workers tax credit
“Over the last 30 years, our province has developed a world-class workforce by constructing, fabricating and maintaining projects. Now we are seeing increasing amounts of work from our resources constructed out of the country or by out-of-province workers, taking away good construction jobs from qualified Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Collectively, if we do not take immediate measures to secure these jobs for local residents, they will be lost from our province forever.” – John Leonard, President, Trades NL
Trades NL will share the Party Leader responses as they are received.
